There are a number of interesting facts about electricity. Here are just a few: 1. Electricity moves at the speed of light – that's 299,792,458 metres per second! 2. The Greeks discovered that rubbing amber against animal fur produced static electricity over 2,500 years ago. 3. Benjamin Franklin conducted his famous kite experiment to show that lightning was a form of electricity. 4. Thomas Edison is famous for inventing the light bulb, but did you know he also invented the phonograph, the motion picture camera and the alkaline storage battery? 5. Nikola Tesla was a brilliant inventor who worked with alternating current (AC) electricity, which is the type of electricity we use in our homes and businesses today. 6. The flow of electrons in a circuit is similar to the flow of water through a pipe –think of the voltage as the water pressure, and the current as the volume of water flowing. 7. The unit of measurement for electric current is the ampere, named after the French physicist André-Marie Ampère. 8. Electrons are negatively charged particles and protons are positively charged particles. In an atom, the number of electrons equals the number of protons, giving the atom a neutral charge. 9. Metals such as copper and silver are good conductors of electricity while non-metals such as rubber and glass are insulators and do not allow electricity to pass through them easily. 10. The human brain uses electrical signals to communicate with different parts of the body, making electricity an essential part of our physiology.
